Corporate Leadership

Engaging Sustainable Leadership throughout the Organization

If companies are not leveraging sustainability in order to reduce costs, increase employee engagement, and improve their position in the marketplace, they are missing an important opportunity.

This program – offered jointly by the nonprofit Center for Business Excellence, the Sustainable Leadership Forum, and other organizations – addresses the key issue of our times, which is fostering leadership at all levels in the organization (and in society) in order to create a more sustainable future. The proposal is that the program, outlined below, would be developed, offered, delivered, and expanded through a joint venture.

Components and Aspects of the Program

Separate components would be offered for 4 different audiences:

  • Corporate Sustainability Officers and their immediate staffs (co-creation sessions)
  • Senior executives
  • Middle managers
  • Key employees and stakeholders
  • All employees

The content, style, and message of these programs would differ somewhat, but would center around:

  • The nature and urgency of the challenge
  • The converging crises (a la Jared Diamond, Richard Heinberg, etc.): climate change, species collapse, resource depletion, etc.
  • Plausible future scenarios: ecosystem collapse, technological utopia, relocalization, sustainable development
  • Elements of sustainable development: permaculture, cradle-to-cradle, life-cycle analysis, metrics, etc.
  • New business models for sustainability
  • Opportunities and vulnerabilities of the organization in the new environment
  • Language and its role in engineering change
  • Driving change through the organization: engaging leadership for sustainability at every level
  • Stages of denial and how to address them
  • Managing Spaceship Earth
  • Gaia: Restoration, Regeneration, and Ultimate Sustainability
  • Leading the Change (title of our book series)

If you believe that your organization would like to participate in this program and/or partner with us to bring it to corporations, governments, churches, and universities, please contact Jonathan Cloud at 908-306-9075 or jcloud@SLForum.org.

"There is the true joy of life: to be used by a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; to be thoroughly worn out before being thrown on the scrap heap; to be a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that life will not devote itself to making you happy." (G.B. Shaw)

"Leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others. It is not an opportunity to satisfy personal greed." (Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya - thanks to Christine Comaford, Rules for Renegades)
